DESCRIPTION:
APW – Illinois, Sangamo Special with rare gold pyramid bow case, 23J, 16S, heavy 14K gold OF original pyramid bow Sangamo Special style case, gold cuvette, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, broad transverse band pattern nickel damascene, s#3524328. Gross weight of assembled watch 62.6 dwt (97.5 g). A very rare solid gold example of the Sangamo Special pyramid bow case style, this is the first example of this style we have encountered. The case of this watch is not marked with the words "Sangamo Special Model" but is otherwise identical to the typical gold-filled version of this case apart from having hinged rear lids as opposed to a threaded rear lid. Though we had not previously seen an example, the existence of this case and its characteristics is documented by a May 1921 Illinois Watch Co. brochure titled "Selling Prices of Illinois Watches" that illustrates the pyramid bow case style and lists it in both "14K extra weight, solid gold jointed case, with inside cap" for $150 or in gold-filled with "screw back and hinged bezel" for $90. Please see the attached photo for an image of this 1921 advertisement describing this case. CONDITION: Mvt: GRO...
